Angelika Rainer Climbs Her Second 5.14c

Italian climber Angelika Rainer has climbed Pungitopo, a 5.14c first climbed by Adam Ondra on the Red Point Wall at Arco, Italy.

This is the second 5.14c for the 38-year-old champion competition climber. Two years ago, she climbed another Ondra route with Solitary Souls in Arco.

“Two years ago, I climbed Solitary Souls — also in Arco and at the same grade,” Rainer said on Planet Mountain. “The two routes couldn’t be more different: Solitary Souls is a 35-metre overhanging endurance test on jugs and pockets, while Pungitopo is short, intense, and demands precision on razor-thin edges. In the two years between these climbs, injuries and moments of doubt have made this ascent deeply meaningful to me.”

Rainer is a three-time Ice Climbing World Champion and two-time Ice Climbing World Cup winner. In 2017, she became the first woman to climb the drytooling grade of D15 with her ascent of French Connection in the Italian Dolomites. At the time, D15 was the hardest confirmed drytooling grade in the world. She also climbed A Line Across the Sky D15, again in the Dolomites. She stopped participating in ice climbing competitions a few years ago, and is now focused on sport climbing.
