Chaeyhun Seo’s Impressive November Sends in Spain

Chaeyhun Seo just had a big month of sends in Oliana, Spain, as she onsighted 5.14s and repeated a 5.15. To start the month, she flashed the sustained El Gran Blau 5.14a before redpointing the legendary Papichulo 5.15a, one of the world’s benchmark 5.15s. Those early ascents set the tone for what came next, as her momentum continued throughout the month.

Seo then onsighted Los Humildes pa Casa 5.14a, sent Joe-Cita 5.14d, and then finished with an onsight of T1 Full Equip 5.14b. Seo had been projecting Pachamama 5.15a when she decided to try T1 Full Equip. About her send, she said on 8a.nu, “I really didn’t expect an onsight at all, I just tried. It was totally hard and took all my energy from the beginning, but I just pushed and made the moves. The first crux was the hardest for me, and after that it was quite okay.”

Seo, 22, quickly established herself as one of the world’s top comp climbers. She won the 2019 Lead World Cup title, finishing ahead of Janja Garnbret. At just 17, she competed in the 2020 Summer Olympics, finishing eighth. She continued to win big events and qualified for the 2024 Summer Olympics where she finished sixth.

While she had climbed hard rock routes before (La Rambla 5.15a, Open Your Mind 5.14d, and Fish Eye 5.14b), her string of sends this month has been truly impressive. She’s not only a world-class competitor, but also a force on some of the hardest and most iconic routes in Spain.
