Death toll in Tumbler Ridge school shooting corrected to 9, suspect identified

RCMP have identified the suspect in the deadly Tumbler Ridge school shooting as an 18-year-old resident of the community. As well police have corrected the number of people killed.

Police provided the latest update at B.C. RCMP headquarters in Surrey Wednesday morning (Feb. 11), nearly 24 hours after they first issued the emergency alert for the northeastern B.C. community following one of the worst mass shootings in B.C. history.

Nine people are dead – including the suspect – across two locations: Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and a home in the community. Six people and the alleged shooter were found dead by police at the high school and two more people were found dead in a residence that police believe is connected to the school shooting.

The alleged shooter was found dead from a self-inflicted wound, police say.

Twenty-seven others are injured. Two were airlifted to hospital with serious or life-threatening injuries, while the other 25 were assessed and triaged at the local medical centre for non-life-threatening injuries.

B.C. RCMP Commanding Officer Dwayne McDonald clarified that nine people were actually killed in the shooting. It was initially reported by RCMP that a victim transported to hospital died of their injuries on route, but McDonald said she is actually one of two victims that were airlifted to hospital with serious or life-threatening injuries.

RCMP Sgt. Vanessa Munn said the victims killed at the school include a 39-year-old female educator, three 12-year-old female students and two male students aged 12 and 13. At the home, a 39-year-old woman and an 11-year-old boy were found dead.

McDonald said the 39-year-old woman at the home was the suspect’s mother, while the 11-year-old boy was the suspect’s stepbrother.

More to come.
