Air ambulance leaves scene of suspected bear attack in Maple Ridge

A B.C. Ambulance Service helicopter has left the scene of a suspected bear attack in Maple Ridge.

The helicopter departed the grounds of Meadowridge School, located in the 12000-block of 240 Street, at around 12:30 p.m., as heavily armed police officers arrived.

At around 1 p.m., Maple Ridge RCMP released a statement on social media stating police were working with the B.C. Conservation Officer Service in the area of 123 Avenue and 240 Street.

“There is an aggressive bear in the area. Residents are encouraged to remain in their homes and to report sightings to the RCMP or COS,” the statement read.

A worker at Hackers Haven Par 3 golf course, located at 12309 240 St., told Postmedia there was a heavy police presence in the area, but the facility was open.

RCMP, B.C. Ambulance Service, Maple Ridge Fire Rescue Service and Conservation Officer Service vehicles are parked around 240 Street, where it branches off into 241 Street. There are three homes on that stretch of 241 Street before it joins 124 Avenue.

A live bear trap has been brought to the area.
