President Trump on Thursday expressed frustration with Russia after it launched deadly strikes on the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv hours after Trump had lashed out at Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky.
"I am not happy with the Russian strikes on KYIV," Trump posted on Truth Social. "Not necessary, and very bad timing. Vladimir, STOP! 5000 soldiers a week are dying. Lets get the Peace Deal DONE!"
Russian missile strikes hit Kyiv early Thursday morning, killing at least eight people and injuring dozens of others, according to multiple reports. It marked the deadliest attack on the Eastern European nation's capital city since last summer.
The Trump administration has been pushing for a ceasefire in the war in Ukraine, but top officials have in recent days signaled they are prepared to walk away from negotiations if the two sides don't reach a deal soon.
Fighting has been ongoing in Ukraine since Russian forces invaded in February 2022 after amassing troops near the border.
Trump has vacillated between criticizing Russia for its continued assault on Ukraine and lashing out at Zelensky.
Trump ripped the Ukrainian leader Wednesday after he said Kyiv would never recognize Russia’s occupation of Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula. Russia seized Crimea in 2014.
“Nobody is asking Zelenskyy to recognize Crimea as Russian Territory,” Trump wrote Wednesday on Truth Social, saying Zelensky’s “inflammatory statements … makes it so difficult to settle this war.”
