The Tyhee Lake campground will be fully closed as of 11 a.m. today (Sept. 2) due to bear activity in the area.

B.C. Parks issued the advisory this morning and anticipate the closure will be in effect for the rest of the season. Typically this means until the end of September.

Previously, on Sept. 1, the ministry closed the Aldermere Trail for the same reason, although no details were given on what type of bears or activity have been encountered.

Bear encounters often increase at this time of year as food sources dwindle and bears prepare for hibernation prompting them to draw nearer to populated areas.

The day-use and boat launch area remain open as these areas have seen lower bear activity. Nevertheless BC Parks is urging users to engage in bear aware practices and not bring dogs into the day-use area.

Bear aware practices include: watching for bear signs (scat, tracks, etc.); making noise; being vigilant (including not wearing headphones, for example); managing attractants; avoiding being alone; and carrying bear spray.
