Climber Dies Skiing Peak Above Chamonix

A French climber has died after taking a 300-metre fall down the Cosmiques Couloir during a ski descent. Their name has not been released but officials say the skier was in their 50s.

The Chamonix Peloton de Gendarmerie de Haute Montagne (PHGM – rescue team) were notified of the accident just after 9 a.m. on Saturday morning. A search and rescue team left the base at Le Bois, Chamonix in an EC145 helicopter, and arrived at the location 12 minutes later. Due to conditions, the helicopter couldn’t land so a specialist was lowered to the victim.

On the same day on the north face of Mont Blanc du Tacul, two other skiers were caught in an avalanche which they triggered. The PGHM were able to rescue them. And also on Saturday, the PGHM were called to rescue a man who fell down the Capucin Couloir.

Also on Mont Blanc this month, a serac collapsed and partially buried two climbers under avalanche debris – see photos here.
