BURSTIt is with great sadness that we share the passing of Janet Walford, a beloved member of the Smithers community, who died on July 6, 2026 at the age of 77.
Janet was a connector, a welcomer, and a steady presence in the lives of so many. For nearly four decades, she helped shape the cultural fabric of Smithers through her deep love of people, music, and community. In her role at the helm of Mountain Eagle Books, she was known for creating a space where everyone felt welcome— a place filled with conversation, laughter, and warmth.
She spent her final days as she lived many others: surrounded by music, family, and friends at the Midsummer Music Festival. The following morning, she suffered a massive aneurism and passed later that day. In her final hours, she was lucid and held close by loved ones, as they sang to her—including the only song she ever wrote.
Her impact on the local arts scene was profound. Alex Cuba remembered her as “the musician’s mom,” noting the way she uplifted and supported artists. Her vibrant spirit will be deeply missed.
Janet dedicated nearly 40 years to the Bulkley Valley Folk Music Society, contributing to events like the Midsummer Festival, Coffeehouses, and Guitar Camps, as well as supporting the Marshal Boucher Bursary for emerging artists.
Born in Halifax and raised in Prince Rupert, Janet made her home in Smithers in 1987 with her family—a decision rooted in togetherness. She always included others and led with compassion. Her legacy is one of “radical inclusion,” welcoming all folks alike with respect and warmth.
Janet is survived by her children, Simon Walford and Shola Phoenix, and by their father and her lifelong friend, David Walford.
A celebration of her life will be held on September 5, from 12 noon to 2 a.m. at the Smithers Community Fairgrounds. Relaxed Coffeehouse style sets in the afternoon with a community ceremony let by David, a potluck dinner from 5-7 followed by a Dance and Celebrate into the evening. Some of her favourite musicians will be there to celebrate in her honour:

In true Janet fashion, it will be a gathering of music, stories, and community—honouring a life that brought people together.
