Vancouver Goldeneyes fall short against Montreal Victoire

The Vancouver Goldeneyes fell to the Montreal Victoire 1-0 Sunday (Jan. 11).

The Victoire hosted the Goldeneyes in Québec City as part of the PWHL Takeover Tour, in front of a crowd of 14,624.

Montreal Victoire rookie Nicole Gosling scored the lone goal of the game from the blue line during the second period. Gosling shot the puck into the Goldeneyes’ end as many on her line changed. The puck deflected off a Goldeneyes player and went into the back of the net, giving the Victoire the one-point lead, which they held onto until the final buzzer.

Gosling said she knew that first career PWHL goal would come at some point.

“Obviously, you’d like for it to come as soon as possible, but it’s something that I’ve been striving for since the first game. I’m still adjusting to the game and the way it’s played here, so I’m just happy now to finally get that off my back,” she said.

Victoire goalie Ann-Renée Desbiens saved all 26 shots on net, while Goldeneyes goalie Emerance Maschmeyer saved 25 of 26 goals on net.

Victoire forward Abby Roque was given a five-minute major penalty and game misconduct four minutes into the third period for a hit to Vancouver’s Abby Boreen’s head. Vancouver was unable to capitalize on the player advantage as Boreen was given a high-sticking minor penalty about three minutes into the major.

Vancouver has a week off before their next game on Saturday in Toronto against the Toronto Sceptres at 12 PT.

The PWHL entered its third season on Nov. 21 with its original six teams: Toronto Sceptres, Montreal Victoire, Ottawa Charge, Minnesota Frost, Boston Fleet, and New York Sirens, along with the two new teams, Vancouver Goldeneyes and Seattle Torrent.
