Longtime president of the Union of British Columbia Indian Chiefs and spouse to the late NDP MLA Joan Phillip, Grand Chief Stewart Phillip has endorsed B.C. Greens’ leader Emily Lowan for Saanich North and the Islands just over a week from provincial election day.
In a Facebook post from the Greens, Phillip said he was honoured to endorse Lowan for being a “strong and courageous ally for Indigenous peoples in B.C.” and for approaching “environmental stewardship with full respect for Indigenous rights.”
Phillip has been an avid NDP supporter in the past, endorsing his wife’s successful campaign in the Vancouver-Mount Pleasant by-election in 2023, and publicly supporting the party and Joan’s subsequent re-election in Vancouver-Strathcona. Joan died in August of this year.
“Emily understands that the climate crisis is the key global survival issue of our time and takes a proactive, principled, evidence-based approach to coming up with solutions,” said Phillip in the post.
Lowan is running against the NDP’s Kala Bryson, Centre B.C.’s Richard Smith and the Conservatives’ Ryan Windsor. B.C. will vote on election day Saturday, Oct. 24.
