Janja Garnbret is undoubtedly the greatest comp climber of all time, with an astonishing number of gold medals to substantiate that claim. Perhaps one of the reasons why is that Garnbret is always one step ahead of the game. With crack climbs appearing more regularly on the comp climbing scene, the Slovenian climber recruited some help from the British king of cracks, Pete Whittaker.
In a new video released by the Wide Boyz (which you can view below), Whittaker and Garnbret meet up at a climbing gym to go through a variety of techniques for different crack sizes. Garnbret powers her way through fist jams and arm bars. As expected, she catches on rather quickly, but not without a struggle.
The crack training paid off two months later in June at the World Cup Boulder finals in Innsbruck. One of the problems featured a crack section, and Garnbret did Whittaker proud by using her newly acquired skills. A couple of months after Innsbruck, Garnbret put her crack abilities to the test once again when she climbed 100 routes for a fundraiser—one of these routes was a 5.13b crack climb set by Whittaker.
Garnbret didn’t compete often during this year’s comp circuit, but when she did, she made it count. She won gold at every event she participated in this year, including the Lead and Boulder World Cups in Innsbruck, the Lead World Cup in Koper, and the Lead and Boulder World Championships in Seoul.
