Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard posted a Tuesday video warning of the dangers posed by nuclear warfare.
Her comments came after a trip to Hiroshima, where she spoke with residents impacted by a bomb dropped on the city 80 years ago during World War II.
“As we stand here today, closer to the brink of nuclear annihilation than ever before, political elite and warmongers are carelessly fomenting fear and tensions between nuclear powers,” she said in the clip.
“Perhaps it's because they are confident that they will have access to nuclear shelters for themselves and for their families that regular people won't have access to. So it's up to us, the people, to speak up and demand an end to this madness,” she added.
International leaders said they fear the threat of World War III evolving as tensions between Russia and Ukraine stir.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio and President Trump’s special envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff have been working to draft an agreeable ceasefire agreement for the two nations, although conversations have stalled and war has heightened.
Their conflict comes amid the war in Gaza and Iran’s proposal to create nuclear weapons.
Trump has vowed not to let Iran undertake the enrichment of uranium, which is used to produce nuclear weapons.
“We must reject this path to nuclear war and work toward a world where no one has to live in fear of a nuclear holocaust,” Gabbard told her followers on Tuesday.
