Highway 1 commuters who get off in Burnaby will need to pay extra attention this summer.
Road crews will be repaving the Hwy. 1 westbound Kensington exit in Burnaby in July and August.
The closures will be around the clock and will last until the end of August.
Here’s what you need to know.
What’s being closed and why?
The westbound off-ramp exit that connects commuters from Hwy. 1 onto Kensington Avenue in Burnaby will be closed this summer to allow for repaving.
“The ministry is undertaking this work to address pavement settlement issues that have resulted in bumpy conditions for motorists along the Kensington Avenue interchange,” according to a news release from the Ministry of Transportation. “Full closure is necessary to allow crews to safely complete the repairs.”
Those who use the off-ramp regularly will be familiar with the stretch of pavement that has formed into ridges across the lanes that make for a quick but bumpy ride coming off the highway.

How long is the Kensington off-ramp closure set to last?
The closure, which includes the off-ramp and one northbound lane of Kensington Avenue, will be in effect 24 hours a day, seven days a week beginning July 2 until the end of August.
What detour should I use to get from Hwy. 1 onto Kensington?
Westbound drivers are being told to use the Gaglardi Way exit or the Willingdon exit on either side of Kensington to exit into Burnaby during the closure.
Eastbound drivers can continue to use the Kensington off-ramp but should be mindful that, if heading north on Kensington, one lane will be closed to allow room for crews to work.
Drivers should plan for additional time if travelling Hwy. 1 into Burnaby this summer.
