The Iskut Band has approved a new rental housing project aimed at easing a critical shortage of suitable homes in the community and providing more housing options for families in Tahltan Territory.
The Band-owned development will feature detached, single-storey modular homes with two- and three-bedroom layouts. The number of homes, their locations and the construction schedule have yet to be finalized.
“The need for housing in our Territory is dire. Our families need suitable homes and the opportunity to build their lives in their community,” said Chief Marie Quock. “Iskut Band is taking action to help meet that need. By approving this project, Chief and Council are moving forward with more housing for our people and investing in the future of Iskut.”
Following a competitive proposal process, council selected Lake Country Modular as the preferred supplier. The company’s Creston and Kelowna home designs will provide family living spaces equipped with two full bathrooms, kitchen and laundry appliances, enclosed entrances and outdoor decks.
The homes will also feature widened doorways and hallways to improve accessibility, along with cold-climate heat pumps for heating and cooling. Enhanced insulation and ventilation systems are intended to accommodate Iskut’s climate.
Durable building materials, including metal roofing, fibre cement siding and vinyl plank flooring, have been incorporated into the designs to support long-term maintenance and value.
Factory construction will also reduce the amount of work required on site, an important consideration given Iskut’s remote location.
Urban Systems is assisting with project planning and coordination. Outstanding work includes finalizing housing sites, servicing requirements and the project schedule, as well as establishing arrangements for tenant selection and ongoing maintenance.
The Band said further information will be released as those details are confirmed.
