Google Chrome May Soon Turn Webpages Into Podcasts With AI Audio Overviews

Google Chrome for Android is on the verge of a major upgrade that could reshape how users consume online content. The browser is testing a new feature called AI Audio Overviews, which transforms any webpage into a podcast-style audio summary, making information more accessible and engaging for users on the go.

Unlike the traditional “Read Aloud” function, which simply reads webpage text in a single synthetic voice, the new AI Audio Overviews feature uses two AI-generated voices to deliver a conversational summary of the content.

This approach mimics the dynamic of a podcast, with the voices discussing and breaking down the key points of the page in a more natural, engaging format.

A dedicated button allows users to switch between “AI playback” and “Standard” playback at any time. “AI playback” activates the podcast-style summary, while “Standard” mode sticks to a straightforward read-aloud experience.

This toggle gives users flexibility depending on their preferences and the context in which they’re listening.

How It Works

  • The feature is accessed through Chrome’s “Listen to this page” option.
  • When enabled, Chrome quickly generates an audio summary, which can be played instantly.
  • The summary is not a verbatim reading but a condensed, conversational overview, similar to the AI podcast summaries found in Google’s NotebookLM tool.
  • Users can adjust playback speed and switch between modes with on-screen controls.

Currently, AI Audio Overviews are available in the Canary version of Chrome for Android, serving as a testing ground for new features before they are released to the general public.

As spotted in the r/google Subreddit, only a small group of testers currently has access, but the feature may roll out to more users in the near future.

This innovation reflects Google’s broader effort to integrate AI into its products, making information easier to understand and more accessible to everyone.

By converting webpages into podcast-like audio, Chrome can benefit individuals who prefer audio content, have visual impairments, or want to absorb information while multitasking, such as during commutes or workouts.

While the feature is impressive, early testers note that the AI voices can sound robotic and occasionally mispronounce terms. Nonetheless, the ability to generate a podcast episode from any webpage almost instantly is a significant leap in how browsers can serve users’ needs.

As Google continues to refine AI Audio Overviews, Chrome may soon become not just a gateway to the web, but also a personalized podcast generator for the entire internet.
