A man has been arrested and charged with violent offences after allegedly hitting a Smithers RCMP officer with a vehicle.
According to a release, police received a report of a break-and-enter in progress at a residence in Smithers on Feb 21 at approximately 6 p.m.
Frontline officers responded and located a suspect, later identified as Kyle Hanes, seated in a vehicle outside the residence.
As officers exited their vehicles to engage with the accused, the RCMP says Hanes accelerated and swerved the vehicle toward the officers, striking one of them and causing an injury. During the interaction, the officer’s hand broke the rear window of the accused’s vehicle.
He fled the scene but was later located by responding officers.
Kyle Hanes has been charged with Break and Enter with Intent; Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle; Flight from Police; Resisting or Obstructing a Peace Officer; and Assaulting a Peace Officer.
He has been remanded in custody, and his next court appearance is on Feb. 24.
“This incident highlights the risks officers face while protecting the community,” said Staff Sergeant Ryan Law. “Despite being injured, our officer continued assisting in the search and arrest of this individual. That level of commitment is what our team brings to this community every day.”
An investigation is ongoing.
