The heavy fog that has blanketed much of the Lower Mainland since the weekend is expected to continue until at least Tuesday afternoon.
Environment Canada has issued a yellow fog warning for most parts of Metro including Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster, Richmond, Delta, Surrey, Langley, White Rock, Coquitlam and Maple Ridge — especially areas close to the Strait of Georgia.
The weather agency said there is limited visibility in many areas as a ridge of high pressure over B.C. is trapping moisture near the surface.
“While visibility may improve in the afternoons, fog is expected to redevelop each night,” said Environment Canada in the warning issued early Monday. “The ridge is forecast to weaken and incoming weather systems will flush out the fog by mid-week.”
Vancouver airport said flights are being managed using “low visibility operations” — a protocol that kicks in when visibility drops to below 1,320 feet, or the equivalent of about four Vancouver city blocks. YVR warns that can lead to flight delays.
Drivers should prepare for near-zero visibility and allow extra time to get where they’re going. Headlights should be on at all times and drivers should keep a safe following distance.
The longer-range forecast for Vancouver calls for the possibility of more fog Wednesday, sunny skies through the end of the week and showers over the weekend.
With temperatures dipping close to zero Celsius overnight all week, roads could be slick and snow is possible on the weekend.
