National Geographic Photographer Dies on Mountain in Peru

Mount Artesonraju, a perilous 6,000-metre peak in the Peruvian Andes, claimed the lives of three climbers, including National Geographic photographer Edson Vandeira, 36, this month.

Vandeira, a Brazilian living in Peru, and Peruvian mountaineers EfraĆn Pretel Alonzo, 34, and Jesus Manuel Picon Huerta, 31, went missing after attempting the summit on May 29. After a 10-day search using drones and helicopters, their bodies were found on June 22, likely killed by falling ice.

The mountain has a history of deadly accidents, including avalanches and falls. Vandeira, an experienced climber with 17 years in alpine environments, was training to become a certified guide. His photography, featured in National Geographic and the History Channel, captured wildlife and extreme landscapes.
