Microsoft Teams to Let Users Add Agents and Bots in Current Conversations

Microsoft is set to revolutionize user interaction with artificial intelligence agents and bots in Teams through a streamlined integration experience launching in June 2025.

The technology giant will deploy this enhanced agent engagement system to a randomized subset of users across Teams for Windows desktop, Teams for Mac desktop, and Teams for the web as part of an experimental rollout designed to gather user feedback and performance data before broader implementation.

Summary
1. Teams replaces disruptive pop-ups with a right-side panel for adding agents and bots during conversations.
2. Experimental launch for select users across desktop and web platforms to gather feedback.
3. No admin action required; organizations should notify users of the change.
4. Maintains conversation visibility while browsing AI agents, eliminating workflow interruptions.

Streamlined UI/UX Design

The new implementation addresses critical user experience feedback regarding the current pop-up window system that interrupts workflow continuity.

Under the previous architecture, users accessing the people roster icon in the top-right corner of Chat or Channels windows encountered a disruptive pop-up interface that temporarily obscured their active conversations.

The updated system introduces a right-side panel interface that maintains conversation visibility while providing access to agents and bots through the “Add agents and bots” menu option.

This redesigned Agents and bots panel employs a non-intrusive sidebar methodology, allowing users to browse, select, and integrate AI agents without context switching from their primary communication thread.

The technical implementation ensures that the Chat or Channel conversation thread remains fully visible and accessible during agent selection processes, addressing user complaints about the time-limited nature of the previous pop-up system.

The rollout follows a Targeted Release (Worldwide) deployment schedule, commencing in early June 2025 with completion expected by late June 2025.

Microsoft has implemented this update with zero administrative intervention requirements, utilizing automated deployment protocols across the Microsoft 365 ecosystem.

Organizations will experience seamless integration without requiring tenant-level configuration changes or Azure Active Directory modifications.

The system maintains backward compatibility with existing Tab-based app integration functionality, preserving the traditional “+” sign interface at the top of Teams Chat and Channels windows throughout the experimental period.

This dual-pathway approach ensures continuity for users who prefer the established workflow while collecting behavioral data on the new agent engagement API.

Microsoft’s development team cited specific user feedback indicating that the previous modal dialog system created artificial time constraints and workflow interruptions, particularly during active collaboration sessions.

The new asynchronous panel interface eliminates these limitations while maintaining full access to the Teams app ecosystem and bot framework integrations.

Organizations should prepare internal documentation updates and user notifications to facilitate the smooth adoption of this enhanced conversational AI integration platform.
