Second defendant in Minnesota voter fraud case pleads guilty

A second Nevada resident pleaded guilty Tuesday to filing fraudulent voter registration forms in Minnesota last year.

Ronnie Williams, a 58-year-old former Minnesota resident, is scheduled to be sentenced at a later date on the felony charge that carries a maximum five-year penalty, according to court records. Williams's codefendant in the case, Lorraine Lee Combs, 57, pleaded guilty on June 23.

"Any attempt to undermine that process through fraud will be investigated and prosecuted," acting U.S. Attorney for Minnesota Joseph Thompson said in a statement. "This case sends a clear message — election fraud will not be tolerated in Minnesota."

Combs, who also previously lived in Minnesota but most recently resided in Nevada, agreed to a sentencing deal to serve up to six months in prison and up to three years on supervised release, court records in her case show. No similar arrangement appears in Williams's case file.

According to court documents, Williams and Combs were involved in a scheme to fill out Minnesota voter registration forms in 2021 and 2022 using fake identities and information. Both had signed statements affirming that they were aware that submitting false voter registration information is a felony.

Williams gave the fraudulent registrations to a foundation that is not named in the court documents and received payment in return for each, which he split with Combs, the records allege.

The charges carry up to five years in prison, but sentencing dates have not been set for Williams or Combs, who are not being held in custody while awaiting the judge's final determination.

"Through their actions, Combs and Williams attempted to deprive the citizens of Minnesota of a secure and reliable election process," Special Agent in Charge Alvin M. Winston Sr. of FBI Minneapolis said in a statement on the case last month. "Along with our partners, the FBI will stop at nothing to identify and bring to justice anyone who threatens the security of our electoral system."
