SSS drama production wins big at Northwest Zone Drama Festival

Smithers Secondary School drama students performed and did well at the 2026 Northwest Zone Drama Festival in Prince Rupert during the weekend of Feb. 20-22.

This year’s festival saw performances from Smithers, Hazelton, Terrace, and Prince Rupert.

SSS’s performance of “Elektra”, closed out the festival on Saturday night, and according to their drama teacher, was immediately well received at the public adjudication.

“I enjoyed it immensely,” Brian Lally, a Los Angeles-based film actor and teacher told their teacher, Kyle Tennant.

At the awards ceremony on Sunday, Smithers walked away with some impressive awards. Taylor Delwisch picked up Best Actress, Gryiffin Kernel walked away with Best Supporting Actor, and Katie Murphy was awarded Best Lighting Design. Finally, Smithers Secondary was awarded Outstanding Production of the festival.

They will be representing the Northwest Zone at BC Dramafest in New Westminster from April 30- May 3.

Tennant was thrilled at the result.

“I am incredibly proud of our students for this result. While this is never the goal when we start out, I am more impressed with their growth. Many of these students were getting involved with drama for the first time, and it was great to see them grow in their roles along this journey”.

For now, Tennant said that the students are working hard on their hometown performance of Elektra.

“It’s great for us to have the chance to show our hard work for a home audience. This show has also turned into our biggest and best fundraiser to get the kids down to provincials, which is no small feat when you have to move kids, costumes, and a set.”

Elektra will be playing at the Della Herman Theatre on Friday, March 6th at 7 p.m.

Tickets can be purchased at Interior Stationery, Mountain Eagle Books, and the Smithers Secondary School office.
