Stankoven nets 3 as Hurricanes crush Vancouver Canucks 7-2

A six-game road trip got off on the wrong foot for the Vancouver Canucks.

Logan Stankoven scored three times and Andre Svechnikov added two more, leading the host Carolina Hurricanes to a 7-2 win over the Canucks in NHL action Thursday at the Lenovo Center in Raleigh, N.C.

Mark Janikowski and K’Andre Miller also scored for the defending Stanley Cup champs (3-1-1), with Sean Walker adding four assists and Pyotr Kochetkov making 18 saves to earn the win in goal. Jake DeBrusk had both goals for the Canucks (2-3-0), while centre Elias Pettersson had two helpers. Kevin Lankinen took the loss in goal, stopping 12 of 18 shots. He was replaced after two periods by Leevi Merilainen, who stopped 14 of 15 shots.

Carolina opened the scoring just 78 seconds into the game.

Miller netted his first of the season, slotting a big rebound past Lankinen.

Svechnikov then scored a pair of power-play goals in a 2:14 span, both assisted by Shane Gostisbehere and Jackson Blake, giving Carolina a 3-0 lead before the halfway mark of the period. Svechnikov has three goals on the young season.

Shots on goal after 20 minutes favoured the ‘Canes, 7-3.

Janikowski made it 4-0 3:20 into the second. After a failed Vancouver clearing attempt, the puck came to him to the left of Lankinen and he slipped home his second of the season.

DeBrusk, returning to the lineup after battling illness, got the Canucks on the board 43 seconds later, knocking home a rebound off a shot from Jonathan Lekkerimaki for his first goal of the year.

Stankoven, a former Kamloops Blazers standout, scored his first of the night and second of the season at 13:13, flipping a shorthanded shot over the glove of Lankinen. The Canucks have given up three shorthanded goals in five games.

With less than a minute to go in the period, Stankoven struck again, making it 6-1 this time on the power play. He took a backhand pass from Taylor Hall and snapped a shot past Lankinen from the right offensive faceoff circle.

Carolina held an 18-14 shots on goal margin after two periods.

Stankoven completed his first career hat trick at 11:36 in the third, converting a Hall feed from the high slot and setting forth a cascade of hats from the Carolina fans.

The opportunistic DeBrusk added his second of the game at 13:04, finding the puck in front of the net and slotting it past Kochetkov.
