Voice of America planning partnership with OAN: Kari Lake

Voice of America (VOA) is planning to partner with One America News (OAN), according to Kari Lake, who serves as the senior adviser at the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM).

The proposed partnership would allow OAN, the conservative news outlet championed by President Trump after his 2020 election loss, to provide news feed services to USAGM networks, including the Office of Cuba Broadcasting, Radio Martí and VOA, Lake said.

"This is an enormous benefit to the American taxpayer, who is the sole-source of funding for USAGM's news outlets, which broadcast only to international audiences," Lake said in a statement posted on the social platform X late Tuesday.

OAN is small conservative media outlet known primarily for promoting Trump's unsubstantiated allegations of voter fraud after losing to former President Biden in 2020 — as well as other false claims about the COVID-19 pandemic and vaccines.

The network has in the years since been dropped by a number of leading cable providers and sued by voting systems companies over its coverage of the 2020 election.

Lake, in her statement, noted she does not "have editorial control over the content of VOA and OCB programming, but I can ensure our outlets have reliable and credible options as they work to craft their reporting and news programs."

Trump's tapping of Lake, a fierce critic of the mainstream media and a loyal political ally of the president, has sparked widespread concern about the future of VOA and other U.S. taxpayer-funded foreign broadcasters.

Lake, who previously ran unsuccessful bids for Arizona governor and the U.S. Senate, has sought to trim down the size of VOA's budget and expenditures as part of Trump's overall effort to downsize the scope of federal spending.

"Every day I look for ways to save American taxpayers money," she said. "Bringing in OAN as a video/news source does both."
