1964 Guidebook
The first published guidebook specifically for rock climbing in Yosemite Valley was A Climber’s Guide to Yosemite Valley by Steve Roper, published in 1964 by the Sierra Club. The red-cover book had 195 routes, with each route having a sentence-per-pitch description. It’s considered one of America’s most classic guidebooks. “The 1964 edition…is arguably the urtext of modern rock climbing,” said Joseph Taylor in Pilgrims of the Vertical.
