Environment and Climate Change Canada is warning drivers to expect heavy and blowing snow on the Coquihalla Highway.

The federal weather agency posted a warning early Thursday, saying up to 30 centimetres of snow is expected Thursday and again on Friday.

Drivers are being warned that there could be reduced visibility from Hope to Merritt.

The agency says a weather system passing through the province will bring a prolonged snowfall with strong southwesterly winds.

Snowfall will likely begin to taper off Friday evening, with totals of 40 to 60 centimetres expected. The agency warns that travel will likely be challenging.

The agency added that road closures are possible because of possible hazardous driving conditions.
