Smithers athletes participate in Special Olympics snowshoe regional qualifier

Smithers athletes returned home after competiting in the Region 7/8 Special Olympics snowshoe regional qualifier competition in Burns Lake on Feb 14.

This competition was the first step in the four year cycle leading to provincial, national and world competitions. Special Olympic athletes from all Northern BC participated in the event.

Smithers athletes Torben Schuffert completed in the 5K/10K and 800m races while Seamus Matson, in his first Special Olympics competition, competed in the 100 and 200m sprints. Ann Forbes completed the 100, 200 and 400m events.

All the athletes ran well with numerous personal best times.

Special Olympics Smithers Local currently has 15 athletes participating in snowshoe, basketball, aquatics, club fit, track and field and bocce. If anyone knows of any athletes with intellectual disabilities that may be interested in joining any of their Special Olympic programs, please contact them at Smithers@specialolympics.bc.ca.

They will be hosting a track and field meet on Sunday June 21 and will once again be looking for volunteers. If you would like to get involved, please get in contact with them.
