Electoral events create a lot of work for a lot of people, not just those who are running for office.
There are hundreds of volunteers who step up to campaign for their various people and parties. Government staff, advertising agencies, reporters, sign makers all add an extra load to their daily duties amid an election.
Plus there are those dutifully serving at polling stations, such as the fine gentlemen in the attached history photo.
Geo. A. Meeres captured the photo of election officials tallying votes at the polling booth in Mara Lake in June 1937.
Anyone who used their democratic right to vote in the municipal election last Saturday would have seen similar folks directing voters, signing them up and ushering them to the polling booths.
Lucky for us, we get to exercise our right again this Saturday — two years ahead of time thanks to the snap provincial election.
And again, there may be lineups at the polling station, but the workers will again be there to help us through the process — this time making just one mark for who we want to represent the region as our area Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) in Victoria.
It’s hoped that voter fatigue won’t deter you, because in the end, you can’t complain if you don’t vote.
So while it may put a wrench in your Saturday plans, the polls are open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Find a time that suits you to exercise your right.
And don’t take it out on the election workers, they’re just doing their job.
