Northern Health launches survey to improve equity, inclusion

Northern Health has launched a survey it hopes will improve equity and inclusion, asking residents, patients, and staff to share their experiences.

The Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility (IDEA) Survey opened April 15 and runs until July 22. It gathers feedback from communities across northern B.C. to help shape future policies, programs, and services.

Northern Health says the survey is part of its effort to address barriers affecting Indigenous peoples, racialized individuals, people with disabilities, 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals, and others who face discrimination or exclusion.

“Addressing these challenges builds trust and improves health outcomes across Northern BC,” Northern Health stated in an information bulletin.

The survey explores whether people have experienced or witnessed discrimination and how easy it is to raise concerns about it. It covers issues related to respect, communication, access, and fairness when using Northern Health services.

Participants are asked to identify barriers related to language, disability, geography, and identity, as well as gaps in services such as transportation, interpretation, and accessible facilities. The survey also asks respondents to rank priorities such as cultural safety training, improved access to care, and stronger partnerships with First Nations and local communities.

In Prince Rupert, where residents often travel for specialized care, the survey may help highlight gaps in access, cultural safety, and support services.

Similar challenges exist across many Northern Health communities, where distance and limited resources shape how care is delivered across a region spanning more than 600,000 square kilometres.

Participation is voluntary and confidential, and the survey takes about 10 minutes to complete.

Survey responses will inform a three-year IDEA strategy and future action plans, with results shared through community sessions.
