Strong wind conditions expected throughout Northern B.C., Okanagan, Kootenays

Windy conditions are expected throughout the B.C. Okanagan, northern regions, and Eastern Fraser Valley, and Kootenays on Saturday, Mar. 7.

Environment Canada has issued two different weather alerts due to the wind.

First, from Hope, up Highway 1 and extending to Northern B.C. is under a yellow wind warning.

In these areas, winds are expected to be 70-80 km/h with gusts exceeding 90 km/h.

“A cold front associated with a strong low pressure system passing through northern British Columbia today will sweep across the Southern Interior from this evening through tomorrow,” said Environment Canada.

Along the Coquihalla Highway, the Okanagan Connector, and Highway 3 into the Kootenays, a special weather statement has been issued for the wind, meaning it won’t be as severe.

“Strong and gusty southwesterly winds will develop this evening across the Thompson and Shuswap regions, then spread southward as the cold front moves through the province,” added the government weather agency. “Gusty winds will continue until the system exits tomorrow evening.”

Environment Canada reminds British Columbians to tie down loose items, prepare for disruptions to services, utilities, and transportation, and that the wind could cause local outages.

There is a gap in the Cariboo from that stretches from Kamloops to Quesnel that does not have an weather alerts in place at this time.
