Mounties are investigating after a semi-truck broke through a guardrail and drove off the Alaska Highway and down an embankment, killing both occupants.
According to Northern Rockies RCMP spokesperson Staff Sgt. Kris Clark, at 4:45 a.m. on March 3 emergency services received an automated crash detection notification along the highway, 139 km North of Fort Nelson.
“First responders attended the scene and found both occupants of a loaded semi-truck and trailer were entrapped inside the cab of the vehicle and had both suffered fatal injuries,” Clark said. “The vehicle appeared to have broken through a guardrail before coming to rest down a steep embankment. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.”
Clark said early investigations suggests road conditions may have been a factor in the crash.
“Work continues to extract the vehicle and its load from the embankment,” he said.
