One man was shot by police Friday afternoon in Surrey after two people were stabbed, one fatally, the Surrey Police Service has confirmed.

Homicide investigators and the Independent Investigation Office have taken over the case from Surrey police.

At about 1 p.m., officers were called out to a building in the 13300-block Old Yale Road for a report of an assault. When they arrived, officers found two people suffering from stab wounds.

The suspected stabber had fled.

Emergency crews provided medical care to the victims but one of them died, according to the SPS. The other was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. IHIT is now taking over this part of the investigation.

Police say the male suspect was located a short distance away. There was a confrontation with police that resulted in officers firing their guns.

The suspect was seriously injured and transported to hospital, where he later died. The police actions are now under investigation by the IIO B.C.

Anyone with information regarding the stabbing is asked to contact IHIT at 1-877-551-4448.
