Glacier travel is dangerous at any time of year, which is why people should avoid it unless they have the proper training and gear. Jasper National Park just released a friendly reminder to avoid glaciers unless you know what you’re doing.
“We’ve been talking a lot about the stunning glaciers and icefields in Jasper, and how easy it is to access these frozen wonders,” the park said on social media. “But wandering around on a glacier is no small matter. It can be dangerous and life-threatening without the right training and awareness. Glacier travel is unpredictable, with hazards like crevasses, millwells, snow bridges, and avalanches present year-round. Accidents can—and have—happened. Never attempt to walk on a glacier unless you have the right training and equipment or you are in the company of a certified ACMG guide. Your safety is the top priority.”
Canada’s National Parks’ website has a page dedicated to mountaineering and alpine climbing here. Glacier travel is a technical skill that requires good rope work and team management. It’s more complicated than you’d think if you’ve never done it. Even if you have done it, you should regularly practice crevasse rescue techniques, including prusiking and setting up pulley systems, to be prepared for emergencies.
The videos below give you an idea of how complicated glacier travel can be, which is why you should seek the skills of a certified guide before trying it yourself.
