BURSTThe Liberals are now up to 173 seats in the House of Commons after winning three byelections on Monday (Aug. 31).
Braeden Caley won in North Vancouver-Capilano in B.C., Tanveer Shahnawaz won in Beaches-East York in Ontario and Daniel Gobeil won in Chicoutimi—Le Fjord in Quebec.
Prime Minister Mark Carney, in a statement after Monday’s results, that “at this consequential time for Canada, voters have placed their trust in Canada’s plan.”
Carney’s Liberals now have 173 seats in the House of Commons, followed by 138 seats for the Conservatives, 21 for the Bloc Québécois, five for the NDP and one for Green Party. As of Tuesday, there are five vacant seats.
North Vancouver-Capilano
In North Vancouver-Capilano, Caley got 58.6 per cent of the votes, according to preliminary results from Elections Canada. Conservative Stephen Curran came in second with 29.2 per cent, followed by the Green Party’s Shelley Luce with 8.7 per cent, NDP’s Stephen Tweedale with 3.1 per cent, and People’s Party’s Ehsan Arjmand and Independent Jeff Monds both got less than one per cent each.
The North Vancouver-Capilano seat had been vacant since June after former Liberal MP Jonathan Wilkinson announced April 30 that he accepted Carney’s invitation to serve as Canada’s Ambassador to the European Union.
The riding has been a Liberal stronghold for more than a decade.
Wilkinson was first elected in 2015 when he left the private sector. He was re-elected three more times.
He received 59.8 per cent of the votes in the April 28, 2025 general election.
Beaches-East York
In Beaches-East York, Shahnawaz got 55.7 per cent of the votes. The NDP’s Shannon Devine came in second with 25.8 per cent, followed by Conservative Jim Syrbos with 15.5 per cent, Green’s Bruce Livesay with 1.7 per cent and People’s Party’s Michel Lachance and Canadian Future Party’s Cameron Thomas each received less than one per cent.
The Beaches—East York riding was held by longtime Liberal MP Nate Erskine-Smith.
Erskine-Smith was first elected in 2015 and re-elected three more times. He delivered his farewell speech in the House on June 17.
Chicoutimi—Le Fjord
In Chicoutimi—Le Fjord, Gobeil received 51.3 per cent of the vote. Bloq Québécois’ Caroline Dubé came in second with 32.9 per cent, followed by Conservative’s Régis Gaudreault with 12.5 per cent, NDP’s Raphaël Émond with two per cent and Green’s Nathe Perrone and People’s Party’s François Sabourin each received less than one per cent.
The seat had previously been held by Conservative MP Richard Martel.
Martel was first elected in 2018 during a byelection. He was re-elected in 2018, 2021 and 2025.
He was recently appointed to the Senate by Carney.
