More than 100 people were displaced by an apartment fire in Surrey’s Guildford neighbourhood Sunday night that rendered the building uninhabitable.
Surrey firefighters were called to a fire at a four-storey wood-frame building near 153rd Street and 101st Avenue just after 7 p.m., said Assistant Chief Jerry Siggs.
When crews arrived, flames and smoke were coming out of the second floor, spreading onto the third and fourth floors, and into the roof line.
It took firefighters about 90 minutes to put out the blaze. Crews stayed for several more hours putting out hot spots and helping displaced residents access important items and any pets in their suites.
Investigators were on site Monday working to determine the cause of the fire, which is believed to have started on the second floor.
Most of the people inside the building were evacuated before firefighters arrived.
There were no injuries, but the damage to the 68-unit structure was significant, said Siggs: “The fire burnt through the roof and substantially damaged multiple units.”
Not all suites are damaged, but heavy smoke and water damage and the lack of power and gas means no one is allowed back into the building at this time.
About 100 people were processed Sunday night by Surrey Fire Service, including 32 who required emergency support services.
