An 5.5 magnitude earthquake struck Tibet early this morning, the China Earthquake Administration said. The quake hit the city of Shigatse at a depth of 10 km, no deaths were reported.
Climbers on Everest felt the earthquake, but no damage or harm was done. “We sure felt the quake, but all is okay,” Adrian Ballinger of Alpenglow Expeditions told ExplorersWeb.
“Camps and ropes remain in place, and no avalanches were reported. The route on the North Side of Everest mainly follows the huge Northeast Ridge and so is safe from avalanches most of the time.” Rope-fixing teams have reached the summit of Everest from the north and south sides. Hundreds of climbers are currently waiting to make their way up.
On April 25, 2015, a 7.8 earthquake struck Nepal and triggered an avalanche from Pumori into Everest’s base camp. At least 22 people were killed, surpassing the toll of an avalanche that occurred in 2014 as the deadliest disaster on the mountain. In January, more than 120 died in a 6.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Tibet’s Tingri county, around 80 km away from Everest.
