Watch live: Jeffries gives remarks as government shutdown fight resumes

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) will speak to the press Tuesday as lawmakers have just 14 days left until government funding lapses.

Democrats face a critical choice of how much they want to work with their GOP colleagues to agree on a stopgap funding measure to keep the government open past the Sept. 30 deadline. Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) pressed their Republican counterparts during the August recess to hold a "four corners" negotiation to give them more time to bargain.

On Tuesday, Schumer sent a letter to Democratic lawmakers warning of a possible shutdown. The prospect also comes as President Trump seeks to pull back around $5 billion in funding for foreign aid programs via pocket rescissions.

The press conference is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. EDT.
