BURSTThe 2026 Cannery Road Race is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 12, at the historic North Pacific Cannery in Port Edward.
Twenty-one years after the event began, runners, walkers and children will once again gather at the North Pacific Cannery for one of the North Coast’s longest-running community races.
Participants can choose from five-kilometre, 10-kilometre and 21.1-kilometre half-marathon distances, while children can take part in a non-timed one-kilometre fun run.
The half-marathon is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., followed by the 10K at 9:15 a.m., the 5K at 9:30 a.m. and the children’s run at 9:35 a.m.
A post-race barbecue and awards ceremony will follow.
The race began in 2005 and has since become a familiar fixture on the North Coast running calendar. Despite interruptions, cancellations, and format changes over the years, the Cannery Road Race has continued to draw participants from Prince Rupert, Port Edward, and communities throughout northwestern B.C.
Organizers expect more than 80 participants this year, with numbers remaining relatively consistent in recent years.
The course starts and finishes at the North Pacific Cannery and takes runners along Port Edward’s winding roads. The quiet coastal setting and rolling terrain offer something different from a typical urban road race.
“The Cannery Road Race is very popular because of the route. It’s incredibly beautiful and quiet, while also being relatively challenging with the rolling hills,” said Alex Magliocci, event director for the race.
The community group Rupert Runners is also seeking volunteers to help with the event.
