BURSTA trio of wildfires sparked on Hardy Mountain late Friday night and early Saturday morning have been deemed suspicious.
Grand Forks Fire Rescue responded to the three separate fires within a five-hour span. The first two blazes were reported through 911 around 9 p.m. Aug. 28, and the third around 2 a.m. Aug. 29.
The first two fires were relatively small and dealt with quickly. The third fire was reported at five-by-five metres in size, and had grown to 30-by-100 metres by the time the first officer arrived, the fire department said in a social media post Saturday morning.
The first officer immediately requested additional resources including mutual aid from Christina Lake, and the RCMP.
“The fire was spreading in all directions, but was not close to any structures. Crews were able to action the fire and contain it within a couple of hours,” Grand Forks Fire Rescue said.
The fire grew to an estimated 70-by-120 metres.
“Due to the number of fires, their proximity and timing, the circumstances are considered suspicious,” the fire department said, adding the RCMP and BC Wildfire Service have both been notified and are aware of the incidents.
Anyone who was in the area during that time and observed unusual activity, people or vehicles — or who may have relevant security or dash-camera footage — is asked to contact the Grand Forks RCMP.
“Please avoid speculation or identifying individuals on social media,” the fire department cautioned. “If you see smoke or fire, call 911 immediately.”
BC Wildfire Crews attended the area Saturday morning with a Grand Forks Fire Rescue crew to complete mop-up and ensure the fire is out.
The fire is currently under investigation.
