President Trump’s approval rating has ticked up in his second term, driven by higher support from Republicans and particularly men and conservatives, according to a new poll from Gallup.
Forty-three percent of Americans surveyed in Gallup's latest poll, conducted March 3-16, said they approve of Trump, slightly down from the 45 percent support he registered in the poll in February and the 47 percent approval rating the poll found in January after his inauguration.
Overall, Trump is averaging 45 percent support over the three months, a little better than at this point in his first term when his average stood at 42 percent in Gallup's polling.
Trump is doing 5 percentage points better among Republicans and 7 points better among conservatives at this point in his presidency compared to the same time in his first term, per the Gallup polls.
He's up 6 points among men overall at this point compared to the same time in his first term, and he's also up 6 points among young adults. He's up 9 points among Black adults and 15 points among Hispanic adults, something that Gallup said reflected higher GOP identification and leaning among those groups over the past three years.
Trump does remain underwater in the Gallup poll, with 53 percent saying they do not support the way he's handling his job as president.
One important difference between Trump at this point in his second term and this point in his first term is that the president did not win the popular vote in his first term.
Gallup reported that Trump remains below his peak popularity in his first term, which took place between January 2020 and May 2020 when he hit a 47 percent approval rating in its polling.
The new Gallup polling also found Trump underwater on a number of key issues.
Just 41 percent approved his handling of the economy, foreign affairs, the environment and the situation in Ukraine. Only 39 percent approved of his management of relations with Russia.
His highest score was on energy policy, where 47 percent disapproved but 45 percent of approved of his handling of the area.
Republicans were overwhelmingly supportive of Trump, with 91 percent saying they back his handling of the job.
The latest Gallup poll took place March 3-16, featuring 1,002 people and plus or minus 4 percentage points as its margin of sampling error. Close to 750 people were used for the question about Trump and the economy, with a margin of error of plus or minus 5 percentage points.
