Shots were fired at a parked car in Surrey City Centre early Tuesday but police don’t think it’s related to the continuing extortions in the region.

Surrey Police Service officers were called out just after 2 a.m. after shots rang out near Central Avenue and 133rd Street. An unoccupied vehicle was found with gunshot damage.

“The investigation is in its early stages and the motive for the shots fired is unknown, but it is believed to be targeted and not extortion-related,” said Sgt. Ali Gailus in a news release.

The major crime section is investigating and officers are likely to be in the area Monday looking for physical and digital evidence.

Anyone with information about possible suspects, or surveillance or dashcam footage, is asked to call the SPS non-emergency line at 604-599-0502.

Investigators to look into death in VPD jail

The Vancouver Police Department has called independent investigators after a man was found unconscious in police cells Monday.

At about 8 a.m. on June 15, staff at the VPD jail found a prisoner unconscious and called in first responders from B.C. Emergency Health Services. The man, whose identity isn’t being released, was pronounced dead by paramedics.

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C., which looks into serious injuries and death where police were involved, has been notified and will take over the case. The chief civilian director must determine the facts of the case and whether the death was the result of any police actions or inaction.
