Kazakhstan Holds Early Elections for New Parliament
Kazakhstan has commenced voting in early elections for its new single-chamber parliament, the Kurultai, following recent constitutional changes. Seven parties are competing for 145 seats, but the landscape is dominated by the pro-presidential Adilet party, as independent and opposition candidates were barred from running. Polling stations are being monitored by international observers, though the local watchdog Erkindik Kanaty withdrew due to pressure on civil society. The election unfolds against the backdrop of high inflation and Kazakhstan’s close, yet complex, economic and military ties with Russia.
