Pennsylvania arson suspect used Molotov cocktails, planned to beat Shapiro: Officials

A suspect in the recent arson attack at the Pennsylvania governor’s residence used Molotov cocktails and planned to beat Gov. Josh Shapiro (D), according to local officials.

In a criminal complaint, Pennsylvania State Police said Cody Balmer said that he “would have beaten” the Pennsylvania governor “with his hammer” if he encountered him within the residence. Police also said Balmer “admitted to harboring hatred towards” Shapiro.

Dauphin County District Attorney Francis Chardo also said in a Monday update on the fire that Balmer used multiple Molotov cocktails on Shapiro’s residence.

“These actions were captured on video surveillance. Gov. Joshua Shapiro and his family were within the residence at the time of the attack and had to be evacuated. The fire caused substantial damage to the Governor’s Residence,” Chardo said Monday.

Officials said Sunday that Balmer was in custody over the fire after Shapiro said earlier in the day that “my family and I woke up to bangs on the door from the Pennsylvania State Police after an arsonist set fire to the Governor’s Residence in Harrisburg.”

“The Harrisburg Bureau of Fire was on the scene and while they worked to put out the fire, we were evacuated from the Residence safely by Pennsylvania State Police and assisted by Capitol Police. Thank God no one was injured and the fire was extinguished,” the governor continued.

Both Vice President Vance and Attorney General Pam Bondi weighed in on the fire Sunday, with the vice president calling it “really disgusting violence.”

“Thanks be to God that Governor Shapiro and his family were unharmed in this attack. Really disgusting violence, and I hope whoever did it is brought swiftly to justice,” Vance wrote in a post on the social platform X.

Bondi said she was “deeply relieved that Governor Shapiro and his family are safe, thankful for the first responders who arrived on the scene, and applaud the police work that resulted in an arrest just hours ago.”
