Charges laid in Eric Hamber basketball game stabbing

Two teens are facing assault charges in relation to a stabbing at a basketball game at Eric Hamber secondary school last month that left a teen injured.

The incident occurred around 9 p.m. Feb. 2 at the end of a playoff game between the Eric Hamber Griffins and the Killarney Secondary Cougars senior basketball teams, which are made up of Grade 11 and 12 students.

An 18-year-old boy was stabbed in the arm.

On Thursday, Vancouver police said charges against two teens have been approved. A 16-year-old faces charges of aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. A 15-year-old faces a charge of assault with a weapon.

Both have been released with conditions.

New murder charge in death of woman found in freezer in Maple Ridge

Jessica Cunningham, 43, was reported missing in July 2025. Her remains were found in a freezer in her Maple Ridge home.

A second charge, this one for second-degree murder, has been laid in connection with the death of a woman whose remains were found in a freezer in her Maple Ridge home last summer.

Mylie Barron had pled guilty to indignity to human remains after the discovery of 43-year-old Jessica Cunningham, but the prosecution added another charge for second-degree murder this week.

Barron and Cunningham were in a relationship when she was reported missing in July 2025. Ridge Meadows RCMP were gathering evidence related to the case when they discovered human remains in the house’s freezer on Aug. 26. They weren’t identified as Cunningham’s until early September.

The 48-year-old Barron, who has been in custody, faces sentencing on Friday for the first charge.

“As with all of our investigations, it was important for (Integrated Homicide Investigation Team) investigators to continue to uncover the truth of what happened,” said RCMP Sgt. Freda Fong. “This was a tragic case, and the details have been hard to hear.”
