A rare white humpback whale calf has been spotted in Gitga’at territory.
Gitga’at Guardian Shelby Fisher notified researchers of a resighting of the white humpback whale calf, known as Spirit, on a foggy Tuesday morning just outside the Gitga’at harvesting camp of Kyel.
The calf was travelling slowly with its mother and an escort through the heart of Gitga’at territory. Researchers were fortunate to capture both a fluke photograph of Spirit and a clear identification photograph of the calf’s mother, Kuleana.
The group travelled into Taylor Bight, passing closely by the research lab on their way west.
Researchers thanked Shelby Fisher for the sighting report, as well as Janie at BCWhales for helping identify Spirit’s mother.
