Here's where you can drink on the beach in Vancouver this summer

Beginning May 15, seven beaches — including the pictured Spanish Banks — will allow for public consumption of alcohol during the summer season in Vancouver.

If you’re dreaming about enjoying a nice, cold brewski on the beach this summer, get ready.

Earlier this year, Vancouver city council approved a program that allows drinking on select beaches during the summer, following two years of successful pilot projects.

The program is “dependent on beachgoers being responsible and considerate of others,” according to the city.

Which beaches in Vancouver allow drinking?

You are permitted to drink alcohol at the following beaches:

• Jericho Beach
• Spanish Banks
• Locarno Beach
• Second Beach (Stanley Park)
• Kitsilano Beach
• John Hendry/Trout Lake Beach
• New Brighton Beach

You are NOT permitted to drink alcohol at the following beaches, at any time:

• English Bay Beach
• Sunset Beach Park
• Third Beach (Stanley Park)
• CRAB Park Beach
• Beaches along the Fraser River

When are you allowed to drink on select Vancouver beaches?

The Alcohol on Beaches program is in effect from May 15 through to Sept. 30, allowing for those age 19 and over to consume an alcoholic beverage between the hours of 11 a.m. and 9 p.m. at certain beaches.

What alcoholic drinks are allowed on select Vancouver beaches?

While there are no restrictions on what type of alcoholic beverage is consumed, common sense should prevail.

No beverages in glass containers are allowed, so stick to canned drinks or those in reusable, plastic or paper-based containers instead. (So a wine bottle is a no but a box of wine is a yes.)

What other public spaces in Vancouver allow for drinking alcohol?

There are 31 parks in the city that allow for year-round alcohol consumption , and 16 — like the beaches mentioned above — that only permit alcohol during the summer.
