A New Westminster man is facing charges for child sexual exploitation after an international investigation that led to the rescue of five children in the Philippines.
A three-year investigation was launched in June 2023 after the New Westminster Police Department was contacted by the RCMP’s child exploitation unit about a suspect uploading child sexual abuse material on a public platform. The IP address was traced to a home in New West.
A search turned up several electronic devices that were examined. Later, information came in about a suspect’s “potential involvement in child sexual exploitation offences involving victims in the Philippines,” said Sgt. Andrew Leaver in a statement on Tuesday.
Gerard Saunders has been arrested and charged with possession of child sexual abuse material, making child sexual abuse and exploitation material and agreeing or making an arrangement with a person to lure a child.
Working with the RCMP major crime unit and international partners, police identified and rescued five child victims in the Philippines. Their mother was arrested and is also facing charges for child sexual exploitation offences.
“The diligence and determination of our detectives ultimately led to the rescue of these children,” said Leaver.
“This isn’t a victimless crime, and these are real children behind those screens. This investigation highlights the reality of the far-reaching harm that these offences can cause to children, their families, caregivers and communities.”
Leaver said Saunders has been released with conditions and is scheduled to appear in court.
