Watch live: White House holds press briefing as shutdown threat looms

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre will brief reporters Friday afternoon as the threat of a government shutdown ahead of the holidays inches closer.

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) signaled early Friday that House Republicans would vote on a third iteration of a spending package, which would fund the government through March. Two previous versions fell through amid internal strife and criticism from Democrats and President-elect Trump.

The White House on Thursday blasted Republicans for their plan B funding bill, calling it a “billionaire giveaway." Hours later, the vote fell flat after 38 GOP lawmakers voted to tank the bill, which had backing from Trump.

The president-elect on Friday suggested that if there is a shutdown, it should happen while President Biden is still in office.

The briefing is scheduled to begin at 12:15 p.m. EST.
