72-Year-Old Rock Climber Still Going Strong

Ian Elliott, a 72-year-old Australian rock climber from Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, defies age stereotypes with his impressive climbing.

Discovering climbing in his mid-50s, Elliott climbed his hardest climb, a grade 28 (5.12d), just before turning 70. His journey, captured in the short documentary IAN by award-winning filmmaker Matt Raimondo, showcases his technical skill, physical endurance, and his deep connection with nature. Elliott’s climbing, particularly at Coolum Cave, challenges societal perceptions of ageing, inspiring climbers and non-climbers alike.

Growing up near Coolum in a farming background, Elliott later worked in mineral exploration before embracing climbing. Known for his camaraderie, he often supports fellow climbers at the crag, earning praise from peers like Lucy Stirling for his big heart and inspirational presence.

Despite aging-related challenges, such as reduced cardio, Elliott adapts with strategic breathing and rest techniques. His disciplined approach, coupled with a love for the sport, allows him to do routes like Screaming Insanity (26/5.12a). Elliott’s story encourages others to stay active and push boundaries, proving that age is no barrier to achieving greatness in the outdoors. Watch below.
