A heat warning has been issued for parts of B.C.’s South Coast and Interior regions, with temperatures expected to soar over the mid 30s in some areas.

On Saturday afternoon, Environment and Climate Change Canada said temperatures are forecast to reach 30 C with overnight lows near 16 C for the next two days in Howe Sound, Whistler, Pemberton, east Vancouver Island and Inland Vancouver Island.

Heat warnings are also in effect for the Fraser Canyon and South Thompson regions, where daytime temperatures could soar up to 37 C. Overnight lows are forecast to be between 18 C and 20 C.

The federal weather agency said temperatures above 30 C could continue into Tuesday followed by a cooling trend on Wednesday.

The agency warns that heat affects everyone, but the risks are greater for seniors, people who live alone, people with pre-existing health conditions and those with limited mobility.

Residents are asked to check on family, friends and neighbours, who are at higher risk, particularly if they live alone, to make sure they have a cool space.

Environment Canada and local medical health officers expect an increase in health and safety risks from heat and are advising the public to take precautions.
