Kami Rita Sherpa, a 55-year-old Nepali mountaineer, has cemented his legacy as the “Everest Man” by summiting for a record-breaking 31st time, surpassing his own previous record of 30 ascents set in 2024.
Born in Thame, Nepal, Kami Rita first climbed the 8,849-metre peak in 1994 at age 24 and has since scaled it nearly every year, sometimes twice in a single season. His latest ascent, guiding a 22-member Indian army team, underscores his unparalleled expertise and endurance as a Sherpa guide, a role vital to the safety and success of foreign climbers.
Kami Rita’s journey began in a family of mountaineers; his father was among the first professional Sherpa guides, and his brother, Lakpa Rita, summited Everest 17 times. Beyond Everest, Kami Rita holds the record for the most 8,000-metre peak ascents, with 40 total, including K2, Cho Oyu, Manaslu, and Lhotse.
He has expressed pride in showcasing Nepal’s Sherpa community and boosting the nation’s global recognition. His closest competitor, Pasang Dawa Sherpa, has 29 ascents.
